That is simply not accurate. The Democratic plan to let the Bush tax cuts lapse at the end of the year, which was the way it was passed in the first place, is not to provide additional welfare. It is to extend tax cuts to most wage earners, all but those making more than $250,000 a year.
The other thing you are ignoring is that a lot of the unemployed have been trying to find work and can't. There was an article in the NY Times earlier this week that scared the daylights out of me. It was about laid off workers in their 50s, in many cases for long periods now, who fear they may never find work again.
