For many years I unwittingly used to say 黒ん坊 /koo-rohn-boh/ (equivalent of "nigger") instead of the more proper 黒人 /koh-koo-jeen/ (black person) -- this would likely be considered racist. I wasn't meaning to be derogatory, and wasn't aware of the more proper and "formal" term of "kokujin". Of course, most people that did accuse me of bein racist wouldn't have understood these terms... In those particular cases I was labelled as racist because I was neither "brown" nor "black" (i.e not a "minority" -- as defined politically).
