I guess we could ask the guy in the tv commercial - you know the one - he's sitting out in the sun trying to read and he's holding it like a book. :o) If he wasn't holding it like a book, I wonder if he would get "toasted skin?" :o)

I just took my iPad outside. Now, it's 10:30 AM here and partly cloudy, so I'll have to wait for bright sunshine, but I didn't find reading the iPad screen that difficult. But I'm sure it would bother me for an hour....then again, I have no intention of using an iPad outdoors.

Seriously though, I'm still a book person. I like books and I prefer black and white when reading but color for everything else. The iPad sounds great to me for what I would use it for - a portable communication device with a screen I could actually see :o) (email, internet browsing, short videos, etc...) but for development I think I would stick to my laptop (with a fan stand) :o) Until of course someone invents a floating keyboard... :o)

I'm a combination book person (though I don't read much fiction) / ebook person (I have a huge library of computer ebooks), but I prefer the iPad screen. You prefer the Kindle. LIke I said before, it comes down to personal preference. I never had (and am not likely to have) any expectation that a portable device like the iPad would be used for development.
