Funny thing is I hated Adam Sandler - I thought Opera Man and Canteen Boy were right up there with Terry Sweeney, Tim Kazerinsky bad SNL .
I don't even know why I watched Punchdrunk Love but was completely blown away by it.
Jerry Lewis is another actor whom I find completely unwatchable in comedy, but I think is a powerful dramatic actor. Remember the Ken Wahl series Wiseguy? ( TV debut of Fred Thompson as Rev. Knox Pooley and a terrific turn by Kevin Spacey among others ) Jerry Lewis did a completely straight bit and it was compelling. In King of Comedy he has the straight role with Deniro as the clown ( Rupert Pupkin who kidnaps JL, the talk show host, to do bits with him in the basement )
Still won't watch anything Sandler or Lewis think is comedy, but I may re-watch Punchdrunk Love to see if it was just a one-off brain lapse on my part <g>

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy
Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.
-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
