They had their role, but that was 20 years ago, when everything was scarce - memory, disk space, number of keywords, our time... and we didn't have intellisense, only common sense.

As the language grew, sticking with 4 character abbr became impossible, and now when you have 4 and 5 and in some cases 8 character abbrevia, it really makes no sense to use them anymore. Unless one wants to become creative with bugs.
