Naomi, it probably has to do with the mouse pad on your laptop. Some laptops automatically turn off the mouse pad while you type so that you don't inadvertantly move/click the mouse (which could make you end up somewhere else, in another window) and some automatically turn it off if you're using a USB mouse. Laptops that don't automatically turn off the mouse pad usually have a Function key combination for toggling it off/on.
