>>>>>>Kudos to Halladay for gritting out a win in game 5, even though he was again slightly outpitched by Lincecum. That was only ever my point -- that they are both terrific pitchers.

>>>(The ball caroms off the wall. The right fielder picks it up perfectly as the first runner crosses the plate and the guy on second legs it for home. It is a perfect throw and the cutoff man, the second baseman, is in perfect position. This is the tying run so he lets the throw go through to home plate. It's still got Chinese mustard on it, a throw only the strongest armed major leaguers can pull off. [Jayson Werth of the Phillies demonstrated a beauty on Thursday.] The third base coach windmills his arm at the baserunner, who is already by. The runner, the catcher, and the ball converge. The umpire signals -- and the runner is .....)

>I thought finding gainful employment again would cure my insomnia. Ha! It's 3:25 a.m. and here I am wide awake, listening to Bob Seger.
>
>Speaking of whom, why is there no proper Bob Seger box set? Everyone and their mother has one and yet there is none for one of the biggest rock stars of the 70s. Probably incompetence on the part of the label or other copyright holder. This should be fixed. He was an artist who went both wide and deep and would benefit from a fresh presentation, as would the new fans a box set would bring. Here is one of my occasional inspirations -- the Bob Seger Box Set Project. "Main Street" would be the first song, "Turn the Page" would be the last song, and the rest is up for discussion. There are dozens of essential songs on his released albums, plus lots of great live versions. (A live album was his first to hit the charts). A DVD included in the box, duh. Plus some unreleased songs. One of the saving graces of the desultory greatest hits CD was "In Your Time". He dedicated it to his new son.

>He's not a Miles Davis or John Lennon and didn't try to be. Just an honest rocker who wears his heart on his sleeve. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- thank you, Cleveland! -- and deserves to be. So why no box set? This could be my first internet grass roots effort ;-)

>Back to football vs. baseball. What you have is a jones for violence, no? It must be common because football surpassed baseball as our national pastime some time ago. Even when the Bears stink and Hawks are reigning Stanley Cup holders, this is still a Bears town. And I know it's not local to Chicago.

>I don't beat on like a boat against the current for no good reason. I just honestly prefer baseball. There are nuances to the game that resonate with me. The quiet moments don't bore me. I am really looking forward to the World Series, which has not been the case in several years. Unlike those showcases for the same old handful of rich teams, this will be a series for the masses. The Rangers have never been and the Giants have not been in a while. I am cheering for the Giants but will be happy for whichever team wins.

Re baseball : I'm just still bitter about Rocky Colavito <g>

Re Segar : Don't know about a box set, but I know I've got some great movies I can run in my head with "Night Moves" as the sound-track <g>

What's the story on the new job?

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
