IMO, the answer depends on anyone's answers to your "why not". If the reasons outweigh the advantages of a toolbar, then OK - keeping in mind that the focus will shift, what do these buttons do etc (so maybe using button.when() instead of .click(), and other tricks - surely there's work to be done).
In general, I've found that (in Fox) you can often do better with a non-standard approach, if you know what you're doing and have good reasons for it. Just as often as you can make your life complicated.
