Not necessarily. Perhaps something less political, and more aligned with current state of affairs in VFP.
There are people like for instance Bo Durban, Cesar, Bernard Boat and many others that made great stuff for community
but never got officially selected by M$, understandably indifferent towards VFP.
I am thinking about something similar to SWFOX / Fox Ambassador. Just plain community recognition for achievements.
If it involves Craig Boyd it could be even enjoyable and fun :)

As for avoiding various political and personal issues in selecting recipients, there is one solution that might be workable IMO
Board of respectable elders to select/present candidates, but only community have right to vote. (Via Web)

Kind of like that story about splitting an apple. One side gets to cut, but other side gets to choose :)
