Alright, let's throw Utah State into the discussion. Their schedule is certainly challenging. They're 2-5 on the season. Almost beat Oklahoma (USU lost by 7). So, because the schedule to them is challenging, we should take them seriously.
What you are saying is that a team that is up and coming, for example, Boise State, which is locked into a conference that's not even close to their playing level, shouldn't be counted. It's not their fault that the rest of the WAC isn't very good. And even when they move to the next level (MWC), they still can't be counted because they'll only have one really tough opponent.
I think you should take a job marketing the BCS, because that's how they think.
