You might want to clean out your Source Safe project...

Heck, I connect over the Internet to my SourceSafe database
over a 33.2k in under two minutes (about 200 files).

Also, if you upgraded your project from 5.0 there are some things
that are optimized for 6.0, but it requires a new VSS database
format that's incompatible with 5.0. Make sure you upgrade the
database to 6.0 (not sure how you do that once installed though).
