Do you use the share feature of SOurceSafe? It can slow down VSS noticably.

If you don't find any other possibility you can still temporarily diconnect all files from VSS. Before you open the project, open the PJX file as a table and set all LOCAL fields to .T. Then open the project, open it also as a table and restore the previous LOCAL setting. After that the icons don't reflect the current state, but VFP updates an icon when you try to modify the file. It's getting the current status of each file in the project that takes so long.
