Here's an interesting take on the current Silverlight brouhaha:
http://mtaulty.com/CommunityServer/blogs/mike_taultys_blog/archive/2010/11/01/silverlight-versus-html5-really.aspxI think it lays out Silverlight's position in the overall MS web development tools continuum quite well.
The big topic that Bob Muglia seems to have brought up accidentally or intentionally is the fact that it is very difficult to port something like Silverlight across the exploding field of mobile devices. The major PR blunder of his, IMHO, is that he probably somewhat carelessly shot from the hip and didn't choose his words carefully.
After thinking about all this a bit more, the only thing that really bothered me about what he said was that SL will be mainly a W7P development platform in the future. I can't imagine that this could be the official "scheduled" approach at MS. Unlike with Fox/VFP, MS has continued to pour huge amounts of money and resources into SL and I can't imagine them just simply dropping it anytime soon.
No matter what, it gives me pause now that I've staked a chunk of my professional future on Silverlight... It is an eerily familiar creepy feeling that I may be making a strategic mistake in choosing my tools for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, given the complete lack of HTML5 IDEs there really isn't much of a choice for me, because the .NET IDE is hands down the best development environment out there.
