You and Nick are both giving me good ideas. What I had in mind when the lightning bolt struck (lol) was something much simpler from a simpler time. Playing cards like the ones we grew up with a phrase written on each. You and your significant other agree to the phrases beforehand, and are free to add cards over time. When moments are tense you give your partner a card and you talk about it.

Sure, a little touchy-feely. I might resist it myself. But this has potential.
