Some of the samples were written 15 years ago, before the good practices were established. I've often found the code there hard to follow, and believe me, I've been on a dozen projects and through code written by a few dozen people, I've seen a lot and found my way through it. This, and specially the code in accompanying apps (scx, frx converter, class browser etc) is in a class of its own.
