You're not supposed to modify field in the browse window. What is the exact goal you want to achieve? In any case, you were not able to change the field, so the field is essentially readonly - what you wanted.

However, if you want the field to be readonly in the browse window, it's much easier to make it so.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
