You had the luck to pick about the best time: cars going above 200km/H were few and seldom stable above 220, but the autobahn was nearly empty compared to today. Driving with cars having a topspeed 10 to 30 Km/H less and staying at 85-95% of possible speeds unless on a stretch similar to Frankfurt to Darmstadt (that 4 lane high speed area south of the airport) would give you better average speed than going full tilt today even on parts less straight. Back then you had to dance to the street with the car, now you have to dance *not* into the idiots shearing in front of you with less than 60% of your speed.
