The definition of what is good is what, in the long run, helps the longevity of human civilization. Why don't we steal? Because it's an offense against a fellow human who has worked to create the goods stolen, and in the long run, if theft is rampant, nobody has the incentive to make anything - it will be stolen anyway - so we make nothing and eventually starve. Ditto for other simply human things, which were co-opted by religions later, incorporated into their scriptures and made to look as if invented by them.

I'm not doing anything for a reward from anyone's imaginary friend. I'm doing good when I can, because that's what humans do, and not doing bad whenever I can avoid it, because it will create ill will on the damaged side and my whole community will be a bit worse off because of that, and some of that ill will will eventually fall back on me. There's no fear involved at all, but the fear that the neighbor who suffered damage from me may be a gun toting lunatic.

Do good because you want, not out of fear. However, if you are incapable of finding reasons to do good within yourself, then please do believe in whatever you want, if it will give them to you.
