Actually, calling autofit() on no records would be a signal to it to shrink by itself.

BTW... "dropping table on the form"... wouldn't it introduce a wizard created grid? Then there may be the wizard framework code firing behind your back, and it could have resized it right there... Check the class of your grid, and try to ask yourself the usual barrage of TSA mandated questions about it - did you yourself pack it etc etc.

Dropping sounds like a dropping sometimes. You never know which animal made it.
