That was my initial reaction, but I did a little research and Wikipedia claims the Red Cross symbol was derived from the Swiss flag (its inverse). If you do some spelunking about the origins of the Swiss flag, one school of thought views it as derived from the Christian crux invicta.

So the contrast with the Red Crescent seems obvious, but it's not that simple.
