You'd know. Flu doesn't feel like a cold. It feels horrible. Your body aches all over and you can't do anything.
Last time I had flu, it came on while we were sitting at a middle school concert. Felt fine when we got there, and by the time we got home, I just crawled into bed and stayed for several days.

Seems to me, for the most part, they get it right. They formulate a new vaccine each year, and I can only remember once in recent history where they were way off. And, IIRC, even that year, the vaccine helped with immunity, just didn't give the overall immunity it usually does.
