Unrestrained capitalism would have forced all the bailout babies to now be bankrupt, and unrestrained capitalism would have replacements stand and take the lead. Then we would have seen real change. You're absolutely right...the problem is that we are moving so far away from a free-market system (even under Bush) that many don't even realize it.
The other problem is the behavior of certain corporations that run to the govt to seek protection or competitive advantages. Their actions are just as bad as a Republican President (George Bush) threatening to use the "Might hand of govt" to force lending institutions to actions to improve the %s on minorities.
There is one, and only one, long-term solution, and that's to dramatically reduce the size of the fed govt. It is FAR FAR too large and too powerful. It has one and only one purpose - protect rights and freedoms of citizens. period. End of sentence. Unfortunately, we're in a situation that's like a meth addict - withdrawal will take a long time, and will be painful.
