In reading through the VB (note: VB, *not* VFP) Programmer's Guide I came across some 'restrictions' which appear to be virtually identical to a VFP 'restriction'.

BOTH languages suffer (in my humble opinion) from the difficulty that ALL REFERENCES TO AN OBJECT MUST BE ELIMINATED BEFORE THAT OBJECT CAN BE RELEASED FROM MEMORY.

In fact in VFP (can't say for VB (still learning <s>)) there is *no* real indication that a Release hasn't done as instructed - it simply returns and lets you keep going. This little bit has to be daft behaviour!

In any case I am considering writing a WISH LIST (and directly to Mr. Green, since the widh list here was clearly ignored for VFP 6) with the suggestion that we of the VFP persuasion would be far better off if it were programmed to DO THE RELEASE whenever so commanded, setting any reference counts, etc to 0 and letting an error happen if the reference is subsequently attempted.

To my mind this could only help everyone while really hurting virtually no one.

BUT. . . my scope of consideration is very limited, so I would like opinions before I proceed.

Cheers,

Jim N
