Curious that scientists monitored increased activity but no warnings were published:

According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, a slight increase in Etna's volcanic tremors had been recorded on Tuesday, reaching its peak at 7am local time yesterday.

The activity diminished but at 9:30pm local time on Wednesday night, Etna roared into life sending lava spewing down its sides

Got a laugh out of this reader's comment:

Time to implement carbon credit legislation, and make Sicily pay for this outrageous air pollution and climate change contributor. Had Sicily not been so busy making pizza and drinking wine and Strega, they could have capped this eyesore and plugged up this light show. I don't want the polar ice caps to melt simply because of Sicilian negligence. Why so selfish? Think of the polar bears! Notice the oceans rising!
