Not exactly an Open Source, but having tried SQL Azure was not a disappointment for me. Within an hour, that included a learning curve, I switched .NET desktop application from using local SQL Server to SQL Azure: indexes, triggers, stored procedures, functions --- all kept working. The application became some slower, but still far from becoming annoyingly slow.
