She exhorts me and asks the questions that normally come from the 3 a.m. of the soul. "What are you going to do differently?" she keeps asking me. Tamar is a hardass. And I am very grateful she is my friend.

You're a lucky man... I don't mean this meanly, but I wouldn't waste two seconds of my time on someone who knows his behavior is self and family destructive, but continues down the same old path with platitudes about changing but no meaningful action.

I prefer to spend my valuable free time and effort on someone who is making REAL attempts to change their situation. I know, I've been there. My mother drank herself to death in 3 years after my father was killed in an auto accident. After two years of cajoling her to quit drinking, paying for therapy and intervention, I finally concluded that it was worth my effort or the time away from my young family at the time to worry about it. She died one year later, never knowing her grandchildren ... sad... and your headed down the same path.
