>OTOH I had exactly the Catholic education. Taught by nuns church twice a week etc and my head is relatively ok. I wonder what the difference is between those who suck it all up and those who sit back and think about it is.

Part of the catechism was that thinking about it was sinful <g>.

I'm sure the madrasas are not just throwing haditha out there to stimulate a robust discussion and personal evaluation by the students. The whole point of belief systems is that one *believe*, not that one sits back and thinks about it.

But you are quite right, somebody messing with your head as a kid in no way guarantees that one is going to internalize the message - and in many cases has exactly the opposite effect. But it also depends on the diversity of the culture one is exposed to after (and during) the indoctrination period. A kid getting this training in London is going to have a different situation than the same kid getting the same training in rural Yemen ( or in the case I mention, growing up in Garfield Hts OH vs Carrickfergus. )

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
