Good business sense. MSFT spent some $ again to buy their way in. Nokia was already faltering and it was the perfect opportunity for MSFT. On the other hand, Nokia hasn't put all their eggs in one basket (yet): Even though Stephen Elop was at Microsoft before joining Nokia, Nokia still added this statement on their tablets:

Windows may not be the exclusive operating system for Nokia tablets though.

"We reserve the right to introduce tablets using other platforms, including ones we may be working on internally,"


So, MSFT is committed to WP7 and competing with Apple and staying on the mobile technology bandwagon and willing to spend to get a stronger foothold in the door.
