I am still on hiatus but wanted to pop in to pass along an enthusiasm. No, this is not another of my drunken YouTube posts about musicians I admire. Among all the healthy and positive things I have been doing for myself, and which seem to be working, has been catching up on "Breaking Bad." Previously I had watched the first season, ordered the second season on DVD, and there it sat on my bookshelf until this past week. I have been doing all the right things, and feel great, but even an addict needs some entertainment. And I was not only entertained, I was mesmerized. No wonder Bill Gates watches TV series this way. (His is reportedly "24").

My admiration of this series has grown steadily. The end of the second season floored me. You thought there couldn’t possibly be any more Dramatic Scenes and Revelations, then something came flying in from left field. There was a connection there all along, a connection I had missed, and it was a whopper. Not some bogus whopper like Bobby Ewing has actually been dead all this time, until we gave Patrick Duffy enough money to come back. This was a literary aria, the work of a careful stylist. When the pieces tumble into place it's as satisfying as solving a Rubik's cube. What I loved about is that a relatively minor character, who we have been led to perceive one way, turns out to be a different person entirely. We realize he has been described to us by an unreliable narrator. Just when we are absorbing that an event occurs which is wide open to interpretation. A tip of the hat to the writers.

The following link is full of spoilers. It discusses the season 2 episode names and what they mean.

Here's hoping you are all well. I get better every day.

I am smiling imagining the smiles on some of your faces. Alcoholic recommends TV series about meth dealers ;-) It's a lot more nuanced that that. Recommended.
