I'm a big fan of VFPX and related open community efforts. VFPX, including the name and the original moderators for the project, was my idea and I was able to get them on the secret beta of CodePlex to be there when that site launched. The primary moderators and all of those VFP developers who have contributed to VFPX have far exceeded my expectations.

It's very cool to see great sessions on VFPX and open tools at VFP conferences and user groups. I would like to see more VFP developers download and provide feedback (even if it's just a thanks to the contributors) for various VFPX components, which would help motivate additional efforts by the contributors. It makes sense for some larger community projects to not be part of VFPX, and it's great to see other tools like the ones you mentioned contributed to the community.

The entire Servoy developer toolset is now open source, as of last summer. And Servoy is making parts of their application server open source, with a long term goal of it all being open based on J2EE and only standards based technology.

The term 'open source' was coined based on the Netscape Navigator source code becoming open in 1998. I made GenScrnX 'public domain' at JPL through CalTech approval in 1993, and it was cool to see GenRepoX (by Markus) and GenMenuX (by Andrew) created after that. I would have liked to have seen Visual FoxPro 9.0 itself be made open source, but I knew Microsoft would never do that since it would be competitive against their strategy with VS/.NET, and the IP within VFP used in some of their other products.

>Ken, I was wondering what you thought, at this point, of the vfp open source stuff over at CodePlex like vfpx, foxypreviewer, activevfp, mtmyvfp, etc??
