You can set Zune to not transcode video and audio files. I've had a Zune device for years and never had that happen.

Would I like to connect my phone like a drive? Yes, but I'd be surprised if most phone users want that capability. They want ease of use. It's much easier to just connect the phone and say "Sync".

If you use Skype alot, then I can see where that's important to you. I rarely use Skype and again, I think most phone users don't really care about that feature. Skype should be careful with what they say because if the Nokia deal takes off, they may have to change their minds.

As far as Zune goes - hey its takes a lot of system resources to run that and it wants to transcode all the video files their format so you end up with two copies of movies and such. True Apple isn't much better - but I like the idea of being able to explore the contents of my phone like an external drive - which I guess you *can* do with WM7 with a few hacks.... but the real killer for me at the moment is the lack of software - and no voip solutions. A lot of companies are already saying that don't ever plan to support WM7 - like Skype for example.
