I figured out what my problems were. The first was another error in the jump start instructions.
The height was set to 20 but the instructions never said that it needs to be set to auto.
The other error I found was in the xaml file. in the property window it showed the ListDisplayMember was "CustomerID"
however in the xaml file the property was "CustomerID CustomerID"
Once I corrected it in the xaml file it started working correctly.

As to the samples I have tried to with some success to open them but there are many mismatches in paths and
project names such that generally they won't open without a lot of tinkering and renaming.
