If you're not currently excluding your VFP temp files folder from AV real-time scanning, it would be interesting to do that and re-test your (currently) 9-minute process. You might also re-test with real-time scanning disabled globally.

I'm a fan of enabling write caching on disks as long as:

- the disk's file system is known good - regularly checked with CHKDSK
- the system has good-quality hardware, has been tuned for reliability (updated and correct drivers etc.) and is running through a UPS

It sounds like your process is particularly disk write-intensive. That's the largest performance decrease I can recall hearing of, which could be attributed to disabling write cache.
