I have a question regarding implementing network security. What are the best choices to comply with requirements that ask for encrypted traffic in a network?

We have used IPSec to encrypt the folders on the server, which worked fine, but when using IPSec the network administrator had a lot of trouble implementing and maintaining that system, which seems to be rather complicated.

Are there alternatives to IPSec which are easier to manage, but offer the same level of security?

Or does anybody have experience with IPSec, and perhaps we are overlooking something?
