I still have Office 2003; I don't know how similar it is in Office 2010.

The commands (translated back from Spanish...) are something like: "Tools - Autocorrect". There, on tab 1 (Autocorrect), I see some special symbols, like (c) --> the copyright character, as well as commonly mis-spelled words. On Tab 2 there are several options, including one to replace short hyphen by long hyphen.
