>>My favorite memory of beverages in the south was stopping at a McDonald's somewhere in Georgia while on the move to Orlando. I ordered a Big Mac meal. I had just pulled off the interstate after a lot of driving and a horrendous southern storm and wasn't feeling picky; just food in my stomach. The counter waitress asked what kind of drink I wanted and I said Coke. She said what kind of Coke do you want? No, that was not a drug reference. It was a generic term for soda. If you wanted a 7-up or a Sunkist, or god forbid a Pepsi, this was highly unusual and had to be clarified.

>Yep ... I lived in the Atlanta area for 15 years. Any kind/brand of soda (or soda-pop or pop, whichever noun you prefer to use <g>) was generically referred to as Coke. Weird, but true!

That was also true for me while I was growing up in Patagonia, we would drink / ask for a "coca" which meant any pop (gaseosa)
