Buckley's death in Beirut mobilized a lot of the kind of "diplomacy" that went on after 9/11. Messages of serious intent. I think the bombing was just the loud part.
A thing I remember clearly from that was breakfast TV opening with news just in and TV of someone with half their head blown off. The newsreader apologised but I thought that is exactly what we should see. If we are going to take these actions everybody should be in no doubt about the price being paid.
