It would be handy if there really was a good background check before allowing someone to legally purchase a gun.

I don't mind if the government knows I've purchased or attempted to purchase gun(s). As long as they don't know what, where, or how many I'm OK with it. Full auto is the exception - those should be tracked and owners qualified (and legally they are).
