>>Now that's an interesting device. Are there any commercial products yet?

Depends who you ask. ;-) Try googling "Virtual Retinal Display". In 2010 the Airscouter was released- still clunky enough that people can tell you're using it, if that's seen as a bonus. But there's plenty more- e.g. HIT in University of Washington has a more attractive version.

IMHO VRD is at the same stage we were at with those early Brick cellphones: people who really need it will buy the clunker, but mass appeal will rely on miniturization- e.g. built into designer specs and sunglasses. And people already are thinking about bypassing the eye and its terrible optics to stimulate visual centers directly. IOW the whole concept of physical screen size is going to go away, as is the concept of a personal device needing to function as a handset. IMHO we don't want to get twisted up over the best material for buggy whip stems now that Henry Ford has said you can have any color you want as long as it's black.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
