Well, if you're in "what if" mode, from a business POV the process should look something like this:

1. Determine a spec for "acceptable performance"
2. Determine the most cost-effective way to achieve that performance

The latter might involve:

- hire a consultant who knows how to use WireShark, get her to analyze traffic and tweak the network configuration
- upgrade a 100Mbit network to gigabit
- get faster computers
- modify the application
- maybe a combination of some, or all, of the above

It's by no means obvious that modifying the application is the quickest, lowest-risk and most cost-effective option.
