>>A lot of news reports on how few homes in the southeastern and central part of the state don't have basements (a real necessity when tornadoes hit), what they fail to mention is the water table level is too high for basements (Fayetteville is only around 200' above sea level and you can sometimes hit water at 10' down from the surface - I did on my land when digging wells). In the western and north areas of the state, it's probably more a soil issue and cost...

>One of my oldest and best friends -- he was one of my fraternity sons in college and we were in each other's wedding parties -- got transferred to NC when IBM bought the company we worked for and merged it with a similar company they had there. He lives near Davidson and has for quite a while now. When he and Sue started producing heirs they had a house built and they insisted on a finished basement. The builder kept trying to talk them out of it and it went back and forth for quite a while until eventually Rob got his way. Sue is an artist and mostly looked on in bemusement while Rob and the builder duked it out. He said the builder told him, "This is like the second basement in the history of North Carolina, and the other one was another yankee!" LOL. (Rob is originally from Philly). Re the cost, I'm sure he paid dearly for his finished basement.

If you mean the town of Davidson, it's near Lake Norman (and expensive because of its proximity) and fine for basements (water table wise).... same with the county of Davidson... Wise move (and probably costly) on his part...

What happened to your leave of absence?
