>First, find out if your daughter filled out a W9 (which would have placed her in "contractor" status) or a W4 (which would have placed her as an employee). If she received a 1099 with her SSN on it, then odds are she filled out a W9. But it's critical to find this out...anything she filled out, her employer has a legal obligation to provide a copy.

>If she filled out a W9, then she is on the hook for taxes. Period. You can debate all you want about the employer being unethical, and I don't disagree, but your daughter was of working age and if she filled out what I "think" she might have filled out, she is still on the hook for taxes. So either write the IRS a check now, or contact the IRS (or do it together with her) and set up an installment agreement. Do this NOW.

>My brother and I were taught about taxes and all this, long before we got jobs. We were taught to read our pay stubs, to make sure taxes were being taken out. You need to teach this to your kids, though it sounds like you need to get up to speed with some of this as well. Bitching about Republicans doesn't change the fact that you need to address this.

The 1009 has her SSN on it so you're probably right that it was a W-9.

Again, I never said she is not on the hook for the taxes. She will pay them. All I said was I was mighty irritated at the owner, and still am.
