>>>Yawn. I bitch and moan about some of the directions we have taken but we remain one of the greatest nations the world has ever seen. We are two nations trying to share one hat. We'll deal with it.

The last time the world’s dominant hegemon lost its ability to run things singlehandedly was early in the past century. That’s when the U.S. and Germany surpassed Great Britain. It didn’t turn out well. >
>Not quite the same now. There's no obvious replacement powers. Everyone keeps saying China but they should take a look at comparative military spending first. The Chinese have little in the way of deep water navy or advanced aircraft. They have a long way to go before they can rival the USA.
Thanks God this is what China chooses to do (for now). Once they take over in economic terms, it will be matter of time (and will/need on their part) to upgrade their military power and bring it in line with their growing economic power. Adversly, western economies already reached their peak in economy growt and they are now bound for long slow decline. (Simillar to what happen in Japan after it peaked economically back in 80ies ) Therefore will be very hard to maintain current level of military power forever and ever. (Take for instance UK cutting military budgets this year, it will become trend). And as I said to Mike, I do not see western military brainiacs playing it nice, and simply letting China become world top dog without big fight. Right now it is still all grinding teeth, snifing each other but, barking twds opponent, but eventually it will become fully featured big dogs fight.
