Per earlier dirction from another Universal Thread member, I had already set _screen.themes = .F.

The problem seems to have been resolved however....
I had accidentally inserted a totally blank record in the subject table and the screen code had data value controls on each field. This made the screen effectively inoperative. When I went in and removed the code that created the blank record and also used SQL Server manager to remove the blank record, the problems are all gone.
