I think even assuming that the story told is not always factual,
it is about certain that Obama and part of the political crew knew about it in august.
Good chances that there were other avenues of information,
and if they want to protect these sources they might not reveal mentioning of "first ideas",
which might have been earlier.

There were prez from both sides where such info would not have been secure for more than a couple of weeks.
