You can make lists to follow groups of people. For example, some of my lists are , Utah, .NET, Fox, Microsoft. I can then place specific users in lists. Listed shows you what lists you are on.

In TweetDeck, and I assume other Twitter clients, you can show the lists in columns. It makes for a quick way to see tweets from specific people or a specific topic.
