>I'd go for Spain - for the food! I have a fantasy of living in Barcelona. Move there and I promise to visit a lot. ( more than I do with you all the way down in Akron anyway <bg> )

>I love Spain too. My favorite place so far is Seville. We went to barcelona last summer and I didn't care for it much - someone actually tried to run a scam on us and rob us. The tapas are much better in Seville too <s>.
Spain is nice [although it has lots of german tourists, and being tourist brings out the stupid traits in us...]
but I would not classify it as "safe haven" if you are afraid of national debt, taxes or gov changes.
There are nice options to buy houses cheap, but the best picks will be swallowed up by nationals
and there is the chance of those title problems - slim but costly if it happens.
Betcha in Texas you would still fell more at home in a second Obama term, and the weather difference from Ohio is similar.
New Z OTOH at least sounds intriguing - never been there myself...
When my father stopped working, they spent 4 month each year abroad for 10 years.
You could move your assets at least partially out of the US / into a few separate nests and do likewise...
