A way Google could cement Android's lead is by retrofiting into existing android phones a messenger application that only works in that kind of phone. As an example of the power of that, I am sticking with Blackberry because my coworkers and family also use blackberry messenger. Killer app. That is what network externalities are about.

For all I know Android already has that application. I just haven't heard about it.
