Mike, NFC is "near field communication", see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field_communication ... but the meaning is changing quickly wrt mobile where it's expected to drive electronic payments via your trusty handset. Google, Apple, Paypal and presumably MS all are flat out to produce "the" convenient killer app/platform so they can clip the ticket on gazillions of transactions. Android through sheer numbers is miles ahead on the OS, but Paypal has membership, familiarity and convenience.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
