There's quite a few ideas about altering their course. The problem ones would be real wanderers that would not give us much notice. Most of the regular asteroids that come anywhere near the earth are well known as they are in orbit round the sun as well.

Nuclear bombs probably wouldn't be the best answer as if you split an object up into bits all those bits would still be heading earthwards.
